Surprisingly starring some familiar names, Camilla Belle and Alexa Vega play the two sisters. ĭubbed as the Mexican version of Sense and Sensibility, From Prada to Nada follows two sisters who are left penniless after their father’s death and move to L.A. Screenwriter Andrew Davies is most well known for another Austen adaptation, the 1995 miniseries of Pride and Prejudice, which is a considerably better adaptation despite the success of Sense and Sensibility. Starring a young Dominic Cooper, the three-part miniseries did well with both audiences and critics, with the treatment, visuals and performances are receiving good reviews. Sensitively handled and beautifully performed, the movie stands the test of time and is a go-to for any Austen fanatic.Ī BBC adaptation of the novel, Sense and Sensibility made a nice change to the small screen as well. The movie gave Kate Winslet her breakout role and gave Thompson an Academy Award for screenwriting. One of her most popular novels, Sense and Sensibility, follows a simple plot of two sisters with opposite personalities attempting to find marriage after their father dies and leaves them with nothing.Įmma Thompson’s film is considered the best Sense and Sensibility adaptation, and perhaps one of the best Jane Austen adaptations. The 1995 adaptation of Sense and Sensibility is often thought of as the moment where Jane Austen received a revival in Hollywood. For true Austen fans, there is plenty of material to enjoy in addition to the newly canonized PPZ, from the small screen, to the big screen and to the more outlandish attempts. Let’s do this one, too.Yet another Jane Austen-themed movie is set to release this Friday, the aptly named Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (PPZ), based on the popular 2009 mash-up novel. Have you seen either of them? Be the decider on this one! You can borrow my stripes! (Also, Emma Thompson. These are both TV movies and while it appears that I can stream the 2007 version on Youtube, I cannot find any way to watch the 1987 episode of Screen Two.

Northanger Abbey 1987 (Screen Two episode, TV) While the 2007 adaptation is supposed to be truer to the book, the 1999 version has my late-’90s screen boyfriend Alessandro Nevola as Henry Crawford, sooooooo…tie? I have never seen either version, but Amanda Nelson tells me that the ’95 BBC/Masterpiece Theatre version is excellent, so it’s the winner! (We really need a theatrical adaptation. Emma Thompson can write alllllll the Jane Austen adaptations as far as I’m concerned. It’s just so much fun, and having Darcy be an American worked beautifully. I’m pretty sure I missed some Pride and Prejudice adaptations-there are a LOT!-but of these, I have to go with Bride & Prejudice, the movie that introduced many (white) Americans to Bollywood. Sorry, Jane Austen purists, but Clueless wins by a mile.
